Mindy Canter
Originally from upstate New York, Mindy learned to read music before she could read words. She started playing the piano at age 4 and started playing the flute at age 9. Her entire family is musical, each playing a different instrument.
Classically trained, Mindy's earliest influences were jazz, blues, soul, funk, and rock n roll. She grew up listening to Art Tatum, Erroll Gardner, Oscar Peterson, and Jimmy Smith. Later Mindy embraced the influences of Chris Wood, Ian Anderson, Johnny Heartsman, Herbie Mann, Hubert Laws, Junior Walker, James Brown, Cannonball Adderly, Charlie Parker, and Miles Davis among many others.
Mindy's greatest love and strength is to color music with a sense of magic, guts, and soul that helps to elevate the whole.
Over the years, she have played with Albert King, Michael Bloomfield, Boz Scaggs, Nick Gravenites, It’s A Beautiful Day, Dan Hicks, Charlie Musslewhite, Harvey Mandel, Barry Goldberg, Roy Blumenfeld, Barry Melton, Sista Monica, Roberta Donnay, Curtis Lawson, Lisa Kindred, Souleman E. Rowgie, Danillo Paiz, Rolando Morales, and many others.
Mindy currently plays with The GroundBreakers and various artists in concert, festivals, clubs, private events, and as a studio musician.
